Hollar travelled through the Netherlands in 1634, after a journey up the Rhine from Cologne. The surviving drawings from this trip are rare examples of his work prior to entering the service of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel in 1636. Most of the studies from his Netherlandish travels are contained in two albums, one in the John Rylands University Library at the University of Manchester (inv. Eng. MS. 883) and the other in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (invs. Z.190-195, Z. 531-532, Z. 536 and Z. 556-558).
