An animal and genre painter, Waller was renowned for his 18th Century subjects. This picture, depicting the retreat of Bonnie Prince Charlie after the fateful battle of Culloden is one that Waller returned to on several occasions. A larger version was sold in Uppsala Auktionskammare, 30 November 2010 (lot 107).
