Charles Fussell (1840-1909) was a Pennsylvania-born landscape painter and childhood friend of Thomas Eakins. Fussell studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Eakins and returned later as his student.

The present work is a study for a larger, finished painting in the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, New Jersey.
