Urns of this classical form were fashionable from the late 1790s, usually made with "pistol" handles. These florid flower stem handles, which seem to be a slightly later development, are seen in a large pair of urns in the house of Edward Carrington, prominent Rhode Island China trader in the 1800-1840 period.
