Dr. F. J. Furnivall (1825-1910) was a philologist and one of the founders of the Oxford New English Dictionary. He was a keen oarsman and he developed the new narrow style of sculling boat in 1845. He founded the Frederick Furnivall Sculling Club on the Thames at Hammersmith.
