The combination of a cat and butterfly signifies the wish for someone to live into their 70s or 80s (the cat being a pun for eighty to ninety, mao and the butterfly being a pun for 70 to 80, die) and together with the boy holding the lingzhi branch, a symbol of immortality, signifies that this carving would almost certainly have been intended as a birthday gift.
