John Cunningham was an artist in Carmel, California, and a teacher at Mills College together with Léger in the early 1940s. In 1941 Cunningham asked Léger to teach a two week symposium at the Carmel Art Institute, which he happily agreed to, and during that time dedicated the present drawing to Cunningham.
