See Francis Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers 1660-1840, London, 1983, pl. 62, for an almost identical table, surmounted by a glass display cabinet, by William Trotter (d. 1833). The table was supplied by Trotter for Robert Jameson's Museum of Natural history or "College Museum" designed by William Playfair to house Edinburgh University's natural history collection (now the Talbot Rice Gallery).
