CASE: of portico form, with fluting to the cornices, winged horse mounts to the entablature, ringed columns, on lion paw feet DIAL: associated white enamel dial (restored), signed 'George à Paris', the reverse signed 'Coteau Emailleur...a Paris', pierced and engraved ormolu hands, blued steel sweep seconds hand MOVEMENT: possibly associated, twin barrels, with pinwheel escapement connected to three arm balance below, with steel balance spring and dot regulation arc, countwheel strike on bell

Balance wheel escapements appear infrequently on French mantel clocks. A Louis XVI 'portico' type clock by Charles Bertrand with horizontal balance wheel is illustrated in D. Roberts, Continental and American Skeleton Clocks, Atglen, 1988, p. 33, fig. 20. Another portico-framed clock with horizontal balance is illustrated p. 41, fig. 29.
