When acquired by the present owner in 2001, one of the mirrors bore an 18th century paper label to the reverse of the backboard for 'HUNTER,/GLASS GRINDER, CARVER, GILDER,/CABINET, & FRAME MAKER/No. 44 Piccadilly,/at the Corner of Swallow Street facing,/ST. JAMES'S CHURCH'. The original plate, label and backboard to this example are now lacking.
The maker John Hunter was active at his Swallow Street address from 1779-1793. The same label is affixed to a mezzotint portrait of Sir Edward Astley published in 1771 in the collection of the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd (label reproduced in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.269, fig. 502).
