MING DYNASTY, LATE 15TH/EARLY 16TH CENTURY
Deeply carved throughout with two long-tailed birds perched among ornamental rockwork and branches of prunus and peony in varying stages of growth, rising from the foot, past the stepped shoulder to the everted mouthrim encircled on the side and top with keyfret, all against a floral diaper-ground

Lacquer vases of this type are extremely rare. Compare the similarity of the carving style of the present vase to that on a Ming brushpot with prunus branches on a wave ground, illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, 5, 1995, pl. 54.
