Each piece reserved on the bright blue ground gilt overall with seeded 'cracked ice' with a gilt and carmine-beaded quatrefoil cartouche enclosing a variant scene from Blanchard's 1784 assent in a hot air balloon and with lozenges enclosing flower-heads, the rims edged with a herringbone band, comprising:
A shaped oval tray (plateau du roi, 1^e^r^e grandeur), 11 in. (28 cm.) long
Two cups and saucers (gobelets 'Litron' et ses soucoupes, 4^e^m^e grandeur) (5)

The present service is one of three déjeuner du roi recorded between 1784 and 1786 commemorating the hot air balloon flights of brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier in 1783 or of Blanchard near the town of Sèvres the following year. Extant examples are almost all painted by Viellard, the ballooning scenes within lace-like borders.
