Le modèle de Diane de Gabies fut découvert en 1792 par Gavin Hamilton dans la demeure du prince Borghèse à Gabies.
Comme une large partie des antiquités de la collection Borghèse, la Diane de Gabies fut achetée par Napoléon Ier en 1807. Elle est exposée au musée du Louvre en 1820. Cette sculpture put jouir d'une grande popularité tout au long du XIXème siècle et fut maintes fois reproduite (une copie fut notamment réalisée pour la Cour Carrée du Louvre).
