Sir James Montgomery, 1st Bt. was the son of William Montgomery of Magbiehill and Barbara Rutherford. He held the office of Lord Advocate of Scotland in 1766, M.P. for Peebles in 1768 and was Chief Baron of the Exchequer in Scotland between 1775 and 1781.
