The print represents the unjustly exiled boy attendant to the emperor Mu (r. 1001-946 BCE) of the Western Zhou dynasty who was adopted into Japanese legend as the Chrysanthemum Boy, Kikujido.

Woodcut with handcolored red lead pigment (tan-e) of Kikujido drinking chrysanthemum dew to achieve immortality beside a stream flowing from a cascade in the background, the youth seated between stands of chrysanthemums about to inscribe a large leaf with a brush taken from a writing box, signed Yamato gako Tamura Yoshinobu, published by Murataya Jirobei--very good impression, good color, minor stains, generally good condition
