A comparable French giant carriage clock, also by Drocourt (No. 9106) but with alarm, sold anonymously, Christie's London, 20 February 2008, lot 68 (£5,625). Another, again by Drocourt (No. 7585) and again with alarm, sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 16 December 2004, lot 17 (£6,572). A further closely related Drocourt giant carriage clock without an alarm function (No. 29260) sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 14 July 2004 (£4,780).
Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert (Carriage Clocks, Their History and Development, Woodbridge, 1974, pp. 185-186) note that very few really large carriage clocks were ever made in France and that, when they were, the conventional size was nine inches tall with the handle up. However, the present example is bigger still, at ten inches high with the handle up.
