'The Orchestra', a gilded Lakarmé bas-relief, by Jan & Joël Martel, for Emile Vuillermoz, circa 1927

In the 1927 the noted music critic Emile Vuillermoz commissioned the panels 'L'Orchestre' and 'La Danse' for his Paris apartment, and throughout the inter-war period was to write numerous articles in supports of the Martel's scuplture and exhibitions. Amongst others, he retained a close friendship with Claude Debussy, for whom the Martel's collaboreted with treir brother-in-law, Jean Burkhalter, to built a monument between 1923 and 1932.

Les panneaux 'L'Orchestre' et'La Danse' sont commandés, en 1927, par Emile Vuillermoz -- grand critique musical du tournant du XXème -- pour son appartement, à Paris. Il est, entre autres, proche de Claude Debussy pour qui les Martel réalisent, entre 1923 et 1932, un monument, en collaboration avec leur beau-frère : Jean Burkhalter. Emile Vuillermoz écrit, tout au long des années 1920-1930, de nombreux articles sur leurs travaux et expositions.
