These panels were part of the exceptional collection formed under the guidance of R.W. Symonds by the celebrated connoisseur Fred Skull in the early years of the 20th century. In 1929, Skull purchased and restored Battetsbury Manor, a Jacobean country house in High Wycombe which housed the collection. The house and collection are discussed in a two-part article in Country Life, 30 September 1933, pp. 338-341 and 7 October 1933, pp. 362-366.

The portraits supposedly depict John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) and Sarah Jennings, Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744), his renowned wife and sometime favourite of Queen Anne.
