A FARS SILVER AND GOLD INLAID BRASS BOWL
WEST IRAN, 14TH CENTURY
Of typical form with rounded base and long sloping shoulder rising to the triangular section rim, the shoulder engraved and inlaid with silver, gold and black composition in the form of oval cartouches with thuluth inscription alternating with roundels containing an enthroned ruler flanked by two attendants and birds in flight, a band of alternating trefoil and quatrefoil palmettes below extending to the underside of the bowl, a band of interlace around the rim, considerable silver and gold inlay remaining

The cartouches around the sides of this bowl include the following inscription: al-izz li-mawlana al-sultan al-a'zam malik riqab al-umam mawlana a'dal salatin al-'arab wa'l-'ajam warith mulk [sulayman] al-sultan al-'alim al-'a[di]l (Glory to our Master, the Mightiest Sultan, the Possessor of the necks of the people, the Master of ... the most Just of the Sultans of the Arabs and Persians, the Inheritor of the Kingdom of [Solomon], the Sultan, the Learned, the Just).
