The prototype for this model was exhibited by Sigisbert-François Michel (1728-1811) at the Académie de Saint-Luc, Paris, in 1774. One of the original pair was surmounted by a triton above a dolphin mask and the other, as used here, with a satyr above a goat mask. This prototype was later the basis for a number of subsequent ewers in malachite (a pair of which can be seen in the Wallace Collection, London), in biscuit porcelain (a pair in the Musée d'Orléans) and in bronze (a pair in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris).
