Barton arrived in India in 1800 and served in the Bengal Native Infantry. His skill as a draughtsman was quickly recognised and by 1814 he had been appointed Assistant Surveyor to John Hodgson, senior officer in the Surveyor-General's Department who thought very highly of his work 'Lt. Barton...is exceeded by no one as a Draftsman, either in taking views or giving to Maps and Plans an exquisitely beautiful finish'. Barton's early years in India were spent conducting surveys of Garhwal, Sirmur and Hindur.
