A RARE INSCRIBED BLUE AND WHITE TEAPOT AND COVER
DAOGUANG PERIOD, INSCRIBED WITH A JIYOU CYCLICAL DATE CORRESPONDING TO 1849

Finely painted on one side with a panel depicting a scholar and his attendant crossing a bridge among pine trees growing by the banks of a lake in a mountainous landscape, the reverse with another panel containing a nine-line dated inscription and ending in the iron-red seal Dingfu zhenshang, 'For the treasured appreciation of the Ding Palace', all reserved against a dense stylised lotus ground continuing on to the spout, handle and flattened cover

The Ding Palace mentioned in the inscription relates to Prince Dingmin (1794-1854) who was also known as Prince Dai Quan and it seems that the present teapot was almost certainly commissioned by the Prince. The remainder of the inscription relates to the tea-picking and tea making process.
