A PARCEL-GILT BRONZE CENSER

Well cast around the body with mythical beasts gambolling amidst a sea of crashing waves, between two pairs of confronting stylised phoenix to the waisted neck, and scrolling foliage and ruyi heads to the foot, all finely chased and gilt to highlight the relief decoration against a dark punched ground, flanked by a pair of mythical beast-head loop handles, the centre of the base with incised six-character mark, Yunjian Zhu Zhenming zhi, 'Made by Zhu Zhenming of Yunjian', in a rectangular panel

The craftsman, previously unrecorded, evidently worked in Hu Wen Ming's workshop. It is difficult to be certain whether, as a master in his own right, he was able to use his own mark, or set up in competition after completely assimilating the Hu Wen-ming style without further documentary evidence.
