A VICTORIAN SCOTTISH SILVER PRESENTATION TABLE SNUFF BOX

Oblong, engraved with flowers and foliate scrolls, gilt interior, the cover set with an earlier Chinese Export carved mother-of-pearl panel depicting Leda and her twins Pollus and Helen, corners applied with a garnet flower, a malachite shamrock sprig, a paste and chalcedony thistle and a carnelian pagoda, base inscribed This snuff box of Chinese manufacture, re-mounted in 1859 by Messrs. Lister, was presented to my half-brother, Captain William Wilkinson of the Columbian Navy. He early fell by the sword, while gallantly fighting in the War of Independence waged by the South-American states; having gone out in the command of the "Cumberland" East Indiaman, converted, in the Chilian service, into the "San Martin" of 56 guns.
