The Regency Drawing Room commode, with recessed book-shelves and chiffonier book-shelf capped by a balustraded china-shelf, is designed in the robust antique fashion introduced in the first decade of the l9th century by Gillows of London and Lancaster. The balustrade features in one of their 1836 patterns for a related commode; while their brand GILLOWS.LANCASTER features on another of their balustraded commodes, which is likewise embellished with reeded pilasters, urn feet and Roman truss-capped pilasters (see S. E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 2 vols. Woodbridge, 2008, pl.459; and Sothebys, London, 12 July 1996, lot 236).
