The quality of the execution, ample proportions and delicate carving to the frame of this elegant canapé all point to the celebrated menuisier Georges Jacob (maître in 1765). The distinctive grenades (or pomegranates) finials and piastre-carved arm supports headed by enroulements are elements which are recurrent in his oeuvre. Among the related examples by Jacob featuring such characteristics, a pair of canapés apparently supplied to Monsieur Bonnefoy-Duplan, garçon concierge du Garde-Meuble à Versailles et au Petit Trianon, was sold at Christie's, New York, 22 November 1983, lot 217; a further related canapé with similarly-shaped back was sold from the Collection of Evelyn Annenberg Hall from 640 Park Avenue, 17 May 2006, lot 354, while a third example was sold Piasa, Paris, 19 December 2007, lot 144.
