Elizabeth Petrovna (1707-1762) was the daughter of Peter the Great and Catherine I. She succeeded Ivan VI in a coup in 1741.

The present lot is loosely based on the portrait executed in 1730 by Louis Caravaque (1684-1754), now in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. A similar carved ivory plaque, with inscriptions, is in the Hermitage collection, St Petersburg.
