Gyula Tornai was a pre-eminent Hungarian Orientalist painter, who as well as travelling through and painting images of the Middle East, also worked on a number of Indian subjects such as the present work. He was born Julius Grossmann at Gyöngös in what is modern-day Hungary but finished his formal training in Munich.
