A granite figure of Vishnu
South India, Tamil Nadu, Pallava period, 9th/10th century
Well-carved with the four-armed deity seated in dhyanasana atop a shaped plinth, his principle right hand raised in abhayamudra and his left hand on his hip, his secondary hands raised holding a staff and a conch, clad in a short dhoti secured with an incised belt and further adorned with a broad band of necklaces with beaded festoons down the center of his torso, his face in a benign expression with almond-shaped eye and surmounted by a high headdress
