Four of the eight scenes are based on engravings by Martin Schongauer: The Agony in the Garden (Lehrs 19, Bartsch 9), Christ before Annas (L.21, B.11), The Crucifixion (L.13, B.24), and The Resurrection (L.30, B.20).
We are grateful to Dr. L. Meyer of the Archiv für Kunstgeschichte, München for his help in cataloguing this lot. He compares the present lot with four altar wings attributed to the Meister des hannoverschen Marktkirchen-Altars in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, München (no.269-272) and with a Passion-altar by a Göttingen Master in the Landesgalerie, Hannover (no. 788).
