The present lot with its rough waves with large crests and its monochrome palette is typical of the last manner of the artist, when he often depicted ships in distress (see L.J. Bol, Die Holländische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, 1973, p.81). The influence of Jan Porcellis is apparent.
