A PALE CELADON JADE LUOHAN AND GROTTO GROUP
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Carved in high relief with the solitary meditating Luohan seated in a casual pose, the figure holding a nandina spray in his left hand, all set within a grotto beneath a knarled wutong tree, the reverse with further wutong branches issuing from rockwork and a waterfall cascading down the rocky mountain face, the stone of an opaque pale celadon tone with some russet inclusions

Compare with a similar Qianlong marked jade carving of a luohan seated in a grotto, but holding a sutra beside an incense burner sold at Christie's New York, 20 March 1997, lot 326. Compare two further examples, one from the British Museum collection, the other from the Sir Joseph Hotung Collection, illustrated by J. Rawson, Chinese Jade, London, 1995, p. 410, fig.1 and pl. 29:19 where the author discusses the origins and significance of this group of carvings.
