A FINE LARGE CLOISONNE ENAMEL BALUSTER VASE
YONGZHENG PERIOD (1723-1735)

The elegant ovoid body finely enamelled in yellow, iron-red, cobalt-blue and lime-green on a turquoise-ground to depict downward facing bats alternating above large lotus blooms, scrolling leaves and smaller flowers to the sides, the angled shoulder decorated with eight linked ruyi-heads each enclosing a lotus bloom on a lime-green ground, and a band of smaller ruyi-heads at the base above the tall cylindrical foot, the foot decorated with stylised taotie-masks, repeated on the waisted neck

It is rare to find vases without the need for gilt-bronze embellishment, relying only on form and decoration. A vase with very similar decoration can be found in H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Chinese Cloisonne: The Pierre Uldry Collection, 1989, no. 228.
