The firm of James Shoolbred and Co. started to manufacture high quality furniture circa 1870, for which they were granted a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s. Among the closely related hall stands recently sold at auction, a virtually identical example also attributed to Shoolbred & Co. was sold anonymously, Thomas Hope and the Neoclassical Vision, Christie's, London, 24 April 2008, lot 136 (8,125 including premium), while a virtually identical hall stand, also attributed to the firm, was sold at Christie's, London, 11 September 2008, lot 116 (£8,500 with premium).
