These chairs provide an example of the French Grecian style George Bullock frequently promoted following his 1814 sojourn in Paris. The inlaid toprail follows a Bullock pattern preserved in the Wilkinson Tracings (p.150), as does the design for the chair in its entirety (p.7). In 1817, sixteen chairs of this model executed in oak were supplied by Bullock to Matthew Robinson Boulton for Tew Park, two of which appear in a watercolour of the Morning Room at Tew dated 1849. A set of ten almost identical chairs attributed to Bullock was sold by the late Dowager Lady Camoys, Christie's, London, 19 November 1987, lot 90 and a set of ten of the same design was sold by Mr. Edward Sarofim, Christie's, London, 16 November 1995, lot 104.
