This china-railed 'Chippendale' table features in Messrs Gillow's 1760s archives as a 'tea table'; while one of their 1786 patterns is also filigreed with a ribbon-fretted frieze (see L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800; Royston, 1995, figs. 71 and 73). A related table, with acanthus-scrolled frieze and pilasters of the present pattern, was sold at Christie's West Dean Park sale on 2, 3, and 6 June 1986, lot 211.
The Hague label suggests this table formed part of the collection of antique furniture of the 'Age of Mahogany' assembled from 1925 at The Chantrey, Elstree by Sir Harry Hague (d. 1960) with assistance from the furniture historian R.W. Symonds. His collection was discussed in 1947 by Margaret Jourdain in Apollo Magazine (see vol. 45, pp.38-40; 75-78 and 82).
