The painting was exhibited by the Birmingham Art Union for the benefit of the Birmingham Artist's War fund, for 'sufferers from the war in South Africa'. Art Unions sprang up in cities all over Britain during the 19th Century to encourage the public to buy and appreciate art. Very much like a lottery, tickets could be purchased (in this instance for five shillings each) and then a prize draw would take place, with winners entitled to the prize of a painting.
