French wigmakers and milliners used marottes to display their handiwork in the window or, on the counter of their shops. French marottes were generally composed of papier-mâché and decorated in a naturalistic mode. Conversely, English examples were created from solid elm and generally found simply carved. See Robert Young, Folk Art, London 1999, p. 69.
