This carved wood figure is similar in form to a plaster statuette of George III, attributed to Lawrence Gahagan (fl.1756-1820) sold, Simon Sainsbury: The Creation of An English Arcadia, Christie's London, 18 June 2008, lot 146. Such polychromed statuettes were popularised by related East India Company imports and by the related clay likenesses executed by the Cantonese artist Chitqua (d.1796), while in London around 1770.
