The need for Insurance against Fire became obvious after the Great Fire of London and the Fire Mark was born shortly afterwards. The early lead marks were attached to buildings indicating that it and/or the contents were insured for fire risks. There were approximately two hundred insurance companies that issued over nine hundred fire marks, some only one and others as many as forty-odd different variants. For reference see Brian Wright, The British Fire Mark, 1680-1879. Woodhead Faulkner 1982.
