Marcel Gili commence par travailler, comme jeune sculpteur, avec Aristide Maillol, son parrain. Il expose en 1932 au Salon d'Art Mural, au côté de Zadkine, Le Corbusier, Dufy et Max Jacob. Après la guerre, il s'éloigne de sa tradition naturaliste, pour aller vers un modernisme mesuré, en travaillant le bronze, le cuivre ou l'aluminium.
