En juillet 1884, Rodin envoie deux dessins à son ami Emile Bergerat pour illustrer sa pièce de théâtre Enguerrande. Dans le présent dessin, Rodin représente la mort de la Reine Enguerrande et du sculpteur, le Prince Gaëtan (acte V, scène 7). La figure de la Reine de Corse, ici vue de dos allongée sur le corps du naufragé, a été dessinée par Rodin d'après sa sculpture La Fatigue (vers 1884). La pièce de Bergerat a été publiée dans un livre édité à 601 exemplaires.
In July 1884, Emile Bergerat commissioned two drawings from his friend Rodin to illustrate his play Enguerrande. In the present work, Rodin represents the death of Queen Enguerrande and the sculptor, Prince Gaëtan (act V, scene 7). The figure of the Queen of Corsica, seen here lying on the body of the drowned man, was based on his own bronze La Fatigue (circa 1884). Bergerat's play was published in a book form in an edition of 601 copies.
