Kitajima was Moriyama Daido's student at WORKSHOP, the influential photography school, which opened in April 1974. When the school closed in March 1976, Moriyama -- together with a number of his students including Kitajima -- founded the independent photo gallery Image Shop CAMP in Shinjuku district of Tokyo. The gallery actively promoted works by young Tokyo artists until it closed in February 1984.

Kitajima first printed this captivating, high-contrast image as an oversized print mounted on plywood in 1979 when he organised 12 monthly exhibitions for his series Photomail from Tokyo at CAMP. This print was subsequently shown in 1980 at his solo exhibition Photomail from Tokyo at Minolta Photo Space then destroyed. In the same year, he made a second print, which was reproduced in the 12-volume and single volume editions of Photomail from Tokyo. This second print was also destroyed. The third print, offered here, was made in 1985 for the exhibition Paris--New York--Tokyo at Tsukuba Museum of Photography and is the only extant print of this image. According to Kitajima, period prints from WORKSHOP and CAMP are exceptionally rare as it was customary to destroy the prints after they were exhibited.
