The octagonal top above a frieze carved with quatrefoils and foliage incorporating two drawers with convex quarter-fillets, on an arcaded base with squared columns carved with foliage, on a moulded solid plinth, one drawer inscribed 'BERTRAM & SON DEAN ST OXFORD ST WT', the underside of each drawer with a printed label 'BERTRAM & SON, 100 & 101 DEAN ST., OXFORD ST., W. UPHOLSTERERS AND CABINET MAKERS. ESTABLISHED 1830'

This form of antiquarian gothic octagon table was popularised during William IV's reign by the architect A.W.N. Pugin (d.1852), whose 'Gothic Furniture in the Style of the 15th and 16th centuries, was published in 1835. The Soho firm of William Bertram & son, established in Dean Street in 1830, traded as antique dealers, upholsterers and cabinet makers.
