The original composition in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin, was commisioned by Prince Eugene of Savoye as part of a series of depictions of battles he was involved in. The Battle of Malplaquet was one of the main battles of the War of the Spanish Succession. The Bourbons of France and Spain opposed an alliance of the Habsburg Empire, the English and the United Provinces. The victorious allied army was led by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene.
