The original of circa 1470, on panel, 150 x 247 cm, has been in the Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin, since 1914, when it was acquired from the Monforte de Lemos monastery in Spain (Picture Gallery Berlin, Catalogue of Paintings, 1978, p.184, no.1718). It formed the central compartment of a triptych of which the wings, now lost, depicted the Nativity and the Circumcision. The compositions of the lost wings are recorded in free copies by the Master of Frankfurt (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; Musèes Royaux des Beaux Arts, Antwerp).
