The original, signed, oil on canvas, 114 x 100 cm, is in the Prado, Madrid (E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, II, 1988, p.201, no.500, with ill., where dated to 1626-1629). The sitter was a general in the Spanish army and served under the Marquis of Spinola at the Sack of Breda. He later succeeded him as commander of the Spanish forces in The Netherlands. In 1629 van der Bergh defected to the Prince of Orange. This date is generally regarded as a terminus ante quem for the portrait. The terminus post quem is determined by the return of the artist from Italy in 1627.
