In late 1966, On Kawara began painting his systematic chronicle of daily life with his "Today Series." This work is the first of its kind painted in deep red, a color which the artist did not habitually use. Kawara briefly used red for several months in 1967 and then returned to darker hues until 1977.
Kawara first fixed newspaper clippings to the inside of his daily boxes in February of 1968. This work marks one of Kawara's transitional experimentations with newspaper clippings. Instead of lining the box with a section of a page, the artist collaged New York cinema and theatre listings from this date to the inner edge of the stretcher.
