THE SERVICE CIRCA 1724, THE WATERCOLOUR EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Each piece decorated primarily in iron-red and gilt with touches of turquoise, blue, and green enamels, the arms also with pink enamel, comprising pieces from two services; one bears the arms of Frederick with Marescoe in pretence and impaling Marescoe, and comprises a large circular deep dish, 15½ in. (39.4 cm.) diam., a two-handled double-spouted sauce-boat, 8 7/8 in. (22.7 cm.) wide, and a teabowl; the second service bears the arms, helmet and crest of Frederick, and comprises a large saucer-shaped dish, 15 3/8 in. (39 cm.) diam., four smaller saucer-shaped dishes, 8¾ in. (22.2 cm.) diam., two smaller saucer-shaped dishes, 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) diam., three plates, 8 7/8 in. (22.5 cm.) diam., six teabowls, and seven saucers, 4¾ in. (12 cm.) diam.

Accompanying this lot is a watercolour depicting the Frederick arms, helmet and crest, with the motto PRUDENS SIMPLICITAS BEAT on a ribbon, with a rural scene in the background, signed and dated 'C D'Oyly invt. 23 Sept 1807', 7¼ x 6 in. (18.5 x 15.2 cm.), framed and glazed. (27)

The first service was made for Leonora, widow of Thomas Frederick of Westminster and daughter and heir of Charles Marescoe; the service was probably ordered at the same time as the second service, which was made for her son John Frederick who was created a baronet in 1723.
