THE 1964 VINTAGE IN BORDEAUX ****
"Dismiss the idea that this was anything other than a very good vintage; yet it is tarnished merely because of very heavy but localised rain in the middle of the harvest, mainly in Pauillac at St-Estèphe, which caught out some major châteaux. Ch Latour picked early and made a top-class wine. Ch Lafite, Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Calon-Ségur were all caught with their pants down. But as will be seen, even the rain-soaked vineyards managed to produce some very flavoury wines. Nevertheless, it must be admitted that the very best '64s were made to the south of the Médoc, in the Graves, and on the Right Bank some outstanding Pomerols and St-Émilions. I link 1962 and 1964 in my mind. Both of equal quality, both of quite different styles, the '62s, as we have seen, lean, lively, acidic, the '64s, as I hope I can demonstrate with my notes, chunkier, rounder, fruitier. As always, variations in the two growing seasons were responsible. In 1964 a pleasantly warm spring was followed by a very satisfactory flowering which promised, all being well, a big crop. The hot dry summer and ideal ripening conditions in September led most of the châteaux to start picking around the third week of September. In the Médoc, most were more than half way through, some finished by 8 October, when it rained incessantly for two weeks. Those who had not finished picking either continued or waited. Some châteaux, Lynch-Bages for example, finished harvesting as late as 24 October. The reason the Right Bank got off lightly is because Merlot is an early-ripening variety. ****" MB, Vintage Wine
